For those of you who may have just invested in your first "really" nice shoes, it's obviously tempting to wear them a lot in the beginning. What you should bear in mind, however, is that all shoes benefit from at least a day's rest between uses.
For example, if you have two pairs of shoes and wear one until they are worn out and then do the same with the other pair, both pairs will be worn out more quickly than if you alternate the pairs and thus let the shoes rest after use. This is because damp shoes wear out much faster, no matter how good the quality of the shoes.
If you use your shoes for a day, you normally sweat about 5 cl per foot and by putting them in shoe trees after use and letting them rest for at least 24 hours, you extend their lifetime considerably. You straighten out the sole, smooth out creases, and ensure that the shoes maintain their shape while allowing them to dry properly.
If your shoes have been completely soaked from rain or snow, they usually need even longer time to dry completely, so it's best to let them rest for two days before using them again. Please note that under no circumstances should you place your shoes in front of a radiator or similar as the heat will dry them out and ruin them relatively quickly.
Occasionally wearing your shoes for several days in a row is of course fine, but get into the habit of alternating between several pairs and you'll be doing your shoes and your finances a big favour. This, along with brushing/wiping off your shoes when you get home and making sure you give them shoe care from time to time, will extend their lifespan enormously.
